Martin Krengel, chairman of the Germany’s paper industry association, Die Papierindustrie says the European gas crisis may produce a toilet paper crisis in Germany.

Krengel said in a statement, “We are particularly dependent on gas for the production of tissue paper. Without it, we will no longer be able to provide security of supply.”

Die Papierindustrie produced data showing that on average each German citizen uses 134 rolls on toilet paper per year. Krengel emphasized, “In the current energy crisis, our top priority is to provide people with this important commodity.”

The Bavarian Paper Association warned last month that if natural gas shortages forced paper factories to work at partial capacity, producing paper might become unprofitable and paper plants would simply shut down all production.

The warnings come as the Euro-zone is increasingly forced to come to terms with the idea it will, at best, have to adapt to massively reduced gas supplies from Russia during the coming winter, which will cause energy bills to skyrocket, and will possibly require rationing to assure there is enough gas for the critical function of heating.
