In a Tweet Saturday, Twitter CEO Elon Musk said Twitter Blue will probably, “come back end of next week.”

On Friday, Twitter paused the recently announced program, whereby you could purchase a “blue checkmark” of authenticity for $8, due to a rapidly rising number of fake accounts spoofing real entities, and using the checkmark as an official imprimatur to fool users.

The blue checkmark had previously been used by the platform as a verification of the authenticity of politicians, famous personalities, journalists and other public figures. However to grow revenue, Musk offered a subscription program earlier this week, which included as part of its benefits, a blue checkmark verifying the person as a real Twitter user.

Several users had reported on Friday that the option to sign up for the new subscription service had disappeared, with a source reporting to Reuters that the platform had dropped the option.

Twitter’s support account – which has the “official” tag – issued a tweet saying, “To combat impersonation, we’ve added an ‘Official’ label to some accounts.” The label was initially introduced on Wednesday, however Musk killed it just hours later.

Musk had warned company employees in a company-wide email on Thursday that the social media platform would not, “survive the upcoming economic downturn” if it were not able to boost subscription revenue to offset a fall in advertising revenue, according to a report in Reuters.
