According to a new statement from the UK Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy, (BEIS), China General Nuclear, (CGN) is being removed by the UK government from the Sizewell C project, setting the stage for the first state funding of a new nuclear reactor electrical plant in the UK in over thirty years.

On Tuesday the Department released a statement which said, “The UK government’s investment in Sizewell C will support the project’s continued development … The investment also allows for China General Nuclear’s exit from the project.”

The statement noted, Britain will be investing £679 million ($814 million) into the project, which will cover approximately 50% of the development costs, and will match the contribution to the project by the French power major Electricite de France (EDF).

How much of the investment will go to CGN was not disclosed, however that share will cover buy-out costs, including any tax due, and any commercial profits on the firm’s work to date.

Under the original deal signed in 2015, CGN held a 20% stake in the project. In return it was to aid in financing and developing three nuclear power stations in Britain. It would do so with EDF as a minority partner at the Hinkley Point C and the Sizewell C plants, and as a lead developer at another plant in Bradwell, Essex.

CGN remains a partner in Hinkley Point C, which is currently under construction. Officials note that as Sizewell C is still in early development, they will need to find private investors to fund the project further. The third power plant has yet to have the details regarding it’s status be released.

The decision to remove CGN from the Sizewell C project came following continual calls within the UK government to reduce China’s involvement in the nation’s energy supply, as part of a larger move to reduce economic ties and dependencies on the nation’s second largest economy.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Monday that the “golden era” of UK-China relations was now “over” as he noted that China now posed a “systemic challenge to our values and interests.”
