Bloomberg is reporting that according to data from analytics firm Kpler, Saudi Arabia imported 174,000 barrels of diesel fuel and gasoil per day from Russia during the month of April.

In the previous month, that statistic stood at 137,700 barrels per day. Imports have continued to rise in May, to 191,200 barrels per day for the first two weeks of the month, an amount not seen since 2017.

Simultaneously, Saudi Arabia has taken the title of the European Union’s biggest supplier, a position it has seized from Russia since February. It has been reported that the Kingdom is not directly reselling the fuels it purchases from Russia as that would be a breach of EU and G7 sanctions which have been imposed on the Russian Republic over its military operation in Ukraine.

Bloomberg reported that sources familiar with the matter said the latest surge in imports to the EU was being produced through an increase in output at the Kingdom’s refineries.

The sources also said that the additional exported fuels were being produced in different parts of the country, and were often subject to long-term supply contracts which specified various different specifications.

Kpler data also revealed that Saudi Arabia beat out the US to become the second-biggest exporter of diesel and gasoil in April. EU member states and the UK received almost 35% of the Kingdom’s total April exports.

Meanwhile, Russia is still the number one seller of the fuel, despite the numerous sanctions levied against the nation.
