Bloomberg reported in Friday that according to a declassified document it had acquired, the German government had seen no risks to national or European energy security from launching the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

The security report examining the Nord Stream 2 project, dated October 26, 2021, said, “Overall, the assessment comes to the conclusion that the granting of certification does not jeopardize the security of gas supply in Germany and the European Union.”

The Chancellor at the time, Angela Merkel argued that Russia had always delivered energy reliably, She would later acknowledge that the pipeline was a commercial project with a “political dimension” but she continued to make the case that opening up the pipeline would not threaten Europe’s existing energy supplies.

Merkel’s successor as Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, had originally agreed with Merkel, however after Russia officially recognized the Donbass republics of Ukraine as independent, he reversed course and refused to certify the pipeline.

Since the start of the Ukraine conflict, Europe has accused Russia of using energy as a weapon against the bloc. However since both pipelines endured sabotage attacks, Russia has offered to supply gas freely through the remaining leg of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, and Europe has refused the fuel.
