In February, Spain more than doubled its imports of Russian Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) compared to the same month one year prior, according to recent data released Friday by Spanish energy major Enagas.

Purchases rose 151.4% to 5.46 Terrawatt-hours (TWh) in February, increased from 2.17 TWh in February 2022, according to Enagas.

Although the United States is presently the biggest LNG exporter to Spain, delivering roughly 7.2 TWh, or 22.8% of the nations total imports for February, deliveries are down considerably from the 12.4 TWh which the US was delivering per month last year, according to the data.

Previously Enagas reported that Russian LNG imports by Spain increased 45% last year compared to 2021. In 2022, Russia was the fourth largest supplier of LNG, following the US, Algeria, and Nigeria. The US and Nigeria supplied 20.7% and 20.2% respectively of the LNG imported by Spain as of January 2023.
