Russian state-run energy company Rosatom has announced it may be able to begin supplying clean hydrogen energy to the global market by the end of the decade, with a ready supply of potential consumers already lined up in Asia.

Analysts widely view hydrogen as the future of clean energy, able to be used to produce electricity, power automobiles, and heat homes, while emitting only water as a combustion product.

In an interview with RIA Novosti, the president of the Rusatom Overseas subsidiary, Evgeny Pakermanov, said, “For Rosatom, hydrogen energy is a priority area.”

Pakermanov went on to say that Rosatom is already developing its abilities to produce, transport, and consume hydrogen. He said the company has been testing pilot projects in Russia to develop its ability to handle the fuel efficiently.

Pakermanov said, “We have a project to create large-scale hydrogen production on Sakhalin. And we plan to do it in a shorter period of time. Over the next five years. The project will be focused on both domestic consumption and export.”

He said the fuel would primarily be exported to countries in Asia, where Rosatom sees strong consumption, such as China, South Korea, and Japan.
