Billionaire CEO of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk, has announced that his social media outlet X will reinstate the account of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, following a poll he ran which elected to see the internet talking head returned.

In reply to the poll, which had asked on Saturday if Jones’ account should be returned, Musk posted, “The people have spoken and so it shall be.”

By the time the poll closed, almost 2 million votes had been cast, and roughly 70% had voted to see Jones return.

As of early Sunday, the account had not yet been reinstated.

Following Musk’s takeover of Twitter, he has sought to reinstate many accounts which had been suspended under the previous management, including the account of former US President Donald J. Trump.

Some accounts however, including Jones’, and other figures, such as author and publisher Theodore Beale, who posted under the pseudonym Vox Day, were not reinstated, with no reason given. Beale continues to be banned, having written that Twitter has not responded to his request for any reason for the ban, or avenue of appeal.

Jones’ account had been permanently banned in 2018, along with the account of his media website Infowars, with the platform saying simply that he had violated its behavior policies.

The ban was instituted weeks after Apple, Alphabet’s YouTube, and Facebook had all removed podcasts and channels of Jones’, claiming he had violated its community standards.

Last year, Jones, who was sued by the families of victims of the Sandy Hook School shooting, was ordered to pay the families almost $1.5 billion in damages for defaming them by claiming they were actors who had staged the shooting at the behest of the government, as part of a plot to ban guns.

The families are still seeking to collect on the judgement.
